THE WEIGHT OF AIR

competition: TAC!       with Gaestudio

“El Peso de Aire” is a pavilion that uses the weight of the elements as a formal design element. Each part of the pavilion expresses gravity dialectically, through compression and tension, the stable and the unstable, the material and the virtual. The pavilion consists of eight prefabricated concrete columns that support a roof consisting of two rings, a net and a balloon.

These elements hang from the columns with the help of ropes that maintain the balance of the system. The shape of the pavilion is ensured by the tension of the system. The weight of the air is characterized by the illusion of a ruin and the spanning firmament. This sky creates a sense of virtuality and is intended to stimulate a cosmological imagination that discusses air as a place. The balloon, which is part of the pavilion, creates an urban image, but remains hidden behind the roof. It thus functions more as an iconic and symbolic element.

The wide and structurally light roof makes it possible to design a free and democratic space that is open to different uses.
