By opening up sacred spaces in a way that is exemplary for the region, little-used churches along the Rennsteig high-altitude hiking trail are being rediscovered as places for everyday encounters.

The HER(R)BERGSKIRCHEN see themselves as a 'door opener' for further exploration of the region and create a new tourist feature for the Thuringian Forest. The aim is to connect guests with the diverse offers of the regional nature and tourism landscape as well as the local players by offering them a very special and individual sleeping experience.

Ultimately, new usage perspectives and sponsorship models for the preservation of church buildings will be tested and new impulses for social and democratic coexistence in the region will be set.

The HER(R)BERGSKIRCHEN Thüringer Wald is an official project of the IBA Thuringia and is supported with funds from the Evangelical Church in Central Germany (EKM), the European Regional Development Fund (LEADER), the Tourism Program of the Free State of Thuringia, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the Federal Cultural Foundation, among others.
